For the first time in Malaysia, “The Wizard of Oz” will be staged in Kuala Lumpur to enthrall local musical lovers with its timeless tale and music.

“The Wizard of Oz” is a musical based on the 1939 film with the same title “The Wizard of Oz”. This classic tale tells the story of a farm girl from Kansas—Dorothy Gale (starring Stephanie Van Driesen)—who was being carried away, together with her house by the tornado and landed in the magical Land of Oz.

Desperately wanting to return home, Dorothy sets on a journey to the Emerald City to meet the powerful Wizard (starring Mano Maniam). On the way, she meets Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (starring Suhaili Micheline), Scarecrow (starring Peter Ong) who needs a brain, Tin Man (starring Radhi Khalid) who wants a heart, and Cowardly Lion (starring Zalina Lee) who desperately needs courage.

They all hope the Wizard will be able to grant their wishes, before the Wicked Witch of the West (starring Tria Aziz) catches up to avenge the death of her sister and to snatch back the powerful ruby slippers from Dorothy’s feet.

This legendary musical has given us all these iconic characters and the most popular song of all time, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, sung by Judy Garland in her youth. It has been staged all over the world including a current production in the West End of London produced by Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber. It has also spawned the hit musical, “Wicked”, which tells the story from the perspective of the Witches’ eyes before Dorothy arrives at Oz.

Berjaya Corporation Berhad and Kenny Roggers Roasters will jointly present this musical in support of the growth and development of local performing arts.

Featuring an all-Malaysian cast, directed by Pan Production co-founder Nell Ng and together with the creative team behind the successful “Cabaret”, “The Wizard of Oz” will bring the audience through a magical and musical journey into the wonderful Land of Oz.
