Asiana Airlines Inc., South Korea's No. 2 flag carrier, said Friday that it has launched commercial flights of its first Airbus A380 superjumbo jet on the Incheon-Narita route.
"The plane will bolster Asiana's premium brand image," said company president Kim Soo-cheon, who was present for the tape-cutting ceremony to mark the flight at Incheon International Airport (IIA), west of Seoul.
The company said the two scheduled flights for the day have been booked solid, with average reservation rates for the rest of the month standing at more than 80 percent.
Asiana will use the plane, which seats 495 passengers, on its daily flights to Narita International Airport in Tokyo and its six flights a week to Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok airport. It said with the arrival of the second A380 from Airbus next month, the company will deploy the planes on long-distance flights to Los Angeles starting in mid-August.
The company plans to operate six A380s by 2017, with the planes to compete directly with the same type of jets operated by the larger Korean Air Lines Co. Korean Air has eight A380s, with two more slated to be incorporated into its fleet within the year.
