New Malaysia Airlines On It's Way

Malaysia Airlines’ new CEO Christoph Mueller is wasting no time getting his beleaguered airline back on track. The airline is “bankrupt”. A third of its workforce is to be made redundant. Its fleet is to be trimmed and routes abandoned. Its operations are to be transferred to a new holding company.

Today, it has a new shareholder, the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund Khazanah, replacing the government. Its staff have new contracts. New management is in place. Shortly, the company will transfer its Air Operator’s Certificate from the old MAS to the new MAS, and it has already applied to IATA to transfer its MH airline code. Additionally, new cabins are to be installed in the widebody fleet it keeps.

At a press conference today, Mueller outlined how he expects the MAS phoenix to rise from the ashes of a significant period of ineffectual management, on top of which came the MH370 and MH17 disasters.

“In aviation terms, MAS as we know it is leaving its cruising altitude and preparing itself for a safe landing,” Mueller said. “We are technically bankrupt, and that decline started before the tragic events of 2014.”

The airline will be looking at its route network and ensuring it operates the right aircraft on the right services. Despite having put its Airbus A380 fleet on the market, Mueller expects to fly these aircraft on the Kuala Lumpur-London route, although it is clear that the 12h35m eastbound and 13h30m westbound flight timings mean that additional shorter routes (perhaps to and from Australia) will be needed if the aircraft is to be profitable. MAS will keep its fairly middle-of-the-road first class cabin on these routes, at least to begin with.

The Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 fleets that form the backbone of MAS longhaul operations have been in need of an upgrade for some time, especially in business class. That’s coming, with the current angled lie-flat seats due to be replaced by beds that Mueller promises will be a significant improvement and “above the industry standard”. That would have to be a fully flat bed with direct aisle access at least, and likely an outward herringbone of some sort.

Malaysia-business-class
Malaysia Airlines’ cabin interiors
Look also for the relatively generous pitch in economy class to either be reduced or more heavily featured in advertising. Given the success of Singapore Airlines, it would seem that there is a niche for premium carriers with firm cost control and keen pricing in southeast Asia.

Overall, costs need to come down by 20 percent. Part of that will come from a slash in vendors: MAS currently has 20,000 vendors, and Mueller reckons that the figure needs to be reduced to 2,000 or 2,500.

Staff costs are also a significant proportion of this restructuring. Mueller noted that airlines are “queueing” to take MAS pilots, but it’s uncertain how many of the other 6,000 members of staff will also be snapped up. While Mueller noted that he doesn’t expect all of the 14,000 job offers the new MAS has made to be taken up — for reasons including the fact that staff may already have been made offers with other airlines — MAS is a critical part of the Malaysian economy. The airline’s revenues last year consisted of 0.7 percent of the entire country’s GDP.

A significant amount of work will be needed for MAS’ IT systems to enable these changes. Mueller “identified significant skill gaps” in the existing systems, and it seems clear that a large proportion of the cost savings Mueller expects will come from backend and head office systems. Consolidation from its current 12 headquarters buildings to one at Kuala Lumpur International Airport will be a good start on that. As part of the cost reduction, operations will shortly be transferred to a new holding company, which Mueller likened to the US process of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The rest of the initial work should be completed by September, Mueller said. His end goal? “To end up finally with a profitability that is sustainable”, and not before time.

As Warwick Business School Professor Loizos Heracleous put it, agreeing with Mueller’s assessment: “As a legacy state owned carrier, Malaysia Airlines has had some constraints in terms of optimising routes, staffing levels and general operatioanl efficiency. The tragic events of last year only hastened restructuring actions that sorely needed and should have been taken a long time ago.”

Singapore Airlines SG50 Livery

Singapore Airlines SG50 liverySingapore Airlines has unveiled a special livery celebrating the nation's Golden Jubilee that will feature on two A380s until the end of the year.

The themed superjumbos will be flown on the carrier's London, Beijing, Hong Kong, Mumbai, New Delhi, Shanghai, Sydney and Zurich routes from early June.

The livery includes a ten-metre-tall and 47-metre-long Singapore flag design on both sides of the fuselage, while the two inboard engines are adorned with the official "SG50" logo.

SIA chief executive Goh Choon Phong said: "Singapore Airlines' success is closely tied to the success of Singapore. What better way to celebrate SG50 than by proudly flying the national flag around the world on the world's largest aircraft."

Silk Air Launches New Uniform

SilkAir has launched a new uniform design for its cabin crew. The new one-piece uniforms, which took two years to finalise, come in two variations – aqua-blue for junior crew and plum-red for senior crew. They will be launched on all flights on Apr 15 for more than 500 members of SilkAir’s cabin crew.

The launch, titled ‘SilkAir New ColoursRunway Show’, at ION Sky on Friday (Apr 10), opened with an address by Chief Executive of SilkAir, Mr Leslie Thng.

"Over the years, our uniforms have come to be a reflection of how our airline has matured and progressed to become Asia's most awarded regional carrier, with each design portraying the airline's brand strategy and philosophy relevant at that point in time," said Mr Thng.

Both variations of the uniform are accompanied by a dark blue skirt, in order for SilkAir to be synonymous and align with their role as the regional wing of Singapore Airlines.

The new uniform collection was created by local fashion designer, Alexandria Chen, a NAFA graduate who has designed uniform collections for various established hospitality brands.

“The new SilkAir uniform is stylishly cut and fitted with a defined waistline which makes it easy to wear, flexible and comfortable, allowing cabin crew the ease of movement as they carry out their duties,” said Ms Chen.

This latest uniform design marks SilkAir’s fourth uniform change since it was established in 1989. Its previous uniform changes took place in the 1990s, 1994 and 2004.

“The new design captures exactly what our brand stands for today – a blend of style and sophistication with a touch of modernity consistent with the changing times. It symbolises our goal of making every point of our customers’ experiences on-board an absolute ‘Joy to Fly’,” said Mr Thng.

Thai Airways to End Cargo Services and Downsize its Aircraft Fleet

Thai Airways is making major changes to its services and aircraft fleet. Restructuring within the company will put an end to its freighter operations. Next week, the airline will launch its final two 747-400BCF services.

The company will also stop A340-600 services. Four A330-300 aircrafts will also be decommissioned. By July, Thai Airways hopes to sell 22 of its aircrafts.

The stoppage of services and decommissioning of planes comes amidst a series of losses for the company. The Thai carrier has approximately $5.9bn in debts (the highest in the region) and has seen 7 straight months of losses.

The company’s restructuring is being overseen by Thai Airways president Charumporn Jotikasthira. Charumporn is expected to cut capacity by 20%, sell non-core assets and reduce the fleet size from 101 to 77 aircraft by the end of 2015. As part of the downsizing, the company will be phasing out A340s and 747s. Plans to close routes to Moscow, Johannesburg and Madrid have also been announced.

Thai Airways was once a leader in the cargo market, but the company has stopped and started its freight services multiple times in recent years. The carrier was the first to use a 777F in hopes of returning to freighters. But its losses are partly due to the fact that air freight exports have declined. BFS (Bangkok Flight Services) stated that exports were down 4% in February year-over-year.

The decision to stop cargo services gives other competitors, like Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific, an advantage. Cathay Pacific is investing heavily in cargo despite Thai Airways and IAG stopping their services. Other airlines, like AF-KLM and Singapore Airlines, have decided not to re-invest.

While Thai Airways has seen consecutive losses, Cathay Pacific has seen an increased profit of 20%. Cargo revenues were up in the middle of 2014, which provided the company with a strong fourth quarter.

9000th Aircraft Delivered By Airbus

Airbus celebrated the delivery of its 9,000 aircraft, with the milestone plane an Airbus A321 going to Vietnamese carrier VietJetAir.

“The delivery of our 9000th aircraft comes as we enjoy ongoing strong demand for aircraft across our product line,” John Leahy, Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer, says in a statement commemorating the occasion. “The range of aircraft we offer today is unrivalled, meeting every airline requirement from 100 to over 500 seats with maximum efficiency, uncompromised comfort and broad customer appeal.”

“We are especially pleased to be delivering today’s aircraft to VietJetAir, which is a rising star in the fast-growing Asian region,” Leahy adds. “With the A321, VietJetAir will be able to increase capacity on its most popular routes while benefiting from the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft.”

Airbus delivered its first commercial passenger jet – an A300 – in 1974. Today, Airbus’ commercial passenger jet line-up includes the A320 family, the A330, the A380 and the new A350.

Several older aircraft models are no longer in production, but still fly for major global carriers. Among the most-notable is the four-engine A340. Airbus ended production of the jet in 2011, though the A340 still flies for major carriers in including Lufthansa, Thai Airways, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic, Swiss, China Eastern and others.

Airbus’ landmark 9,000th delivery comes just two years after it delivered its 8,000 aircraft, which came in August 2013. Airbus says it now delivers more than 600 aircraft a year today, a figure that Airbus says “is set to rise further as the demand grows.”

Airbus A350 Delivery To Qatar Rescheduled For Dec 22

Airbus confirmed that the delivery of the first Airbus A350 to Qatar Airways has been rescheduled for December 22.

The handover of Europe’s first mainly carbon-composite jet, originally scheduled for December 13, had been postponed by the airline last week, triggering speculation of a repeat of cabin problems which had delayed delivery if its first A380.

But scheduling problems appeared to have played a part.

Confirming an earlier Reuters report, Airbus said in a media invitation that the delivery ceremony would go ahead in Toulouse on December 22 and would include a preview flight.

Airbus has pledged to deliver the first A350, developed at a cost of some $15 billion to compete with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, by the end of the year.

Emirates A380 Free Wi-Fi

Over 200,000 passengers have used Emirates' free onboard Wi-Fi since October this year, taking advantage of the airline's service to connect with family, friends or colleagues when they fly.

On most Emirates A380s passengers can access 10MBs of free data, enough to send emails, blog, tweet, post on Facebook, or browse the Internet.

Emirates currently offers Wi-Fi connectivity on 86 aircraft – on board all of its 56 Airbus A380s, as well as on 30 of its Boeing 777s. A comprehensive retrofit programme is also underway to install Wi-Fi capability across the rest of its fleet. On 51 of Emirates’ A380s, the first 10MB of data is free, and a token $1 charge is levied for the next 500MB. On all other aircraft, getting online costs US$1 due to the current hardware and software installed.

Until January 1 2015, proceeds from these connection charges will be donated to the Emirates Airline Foundation to help improve quality of life for disadvantaged children around the world.

“Emirates sees inflight Wi-Fi as an essential value-add service that should be freely available for our customers to connect with friends, family and business. At the moment, software and technical limitations mean that on some of our aircraft we still have to levy a token charge for Wi-Fi. We are working hard to overcome this but until then, it is only $1 to get online. We’ve been providing free Wi-Fi and $1 Wi-Fi on the fleet since early October and up to 35% of passengers are using the service, especially on long flights,” said Patrick Brannelly, Emirates’ VP for corporate communications - product, publishing, digital and events.

“Most of our flights are long-haul international routes, and we know that many of our customers want to stay in touch when they travel. That is why Emirates has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our inflight connectivity systems. We especially see a spike in mobile and Wi-Fi usage during major festive seasons, and we believe that our customers will welcome the fact that if they have to pay a $1 connection fee, proceeds will go towards supporting a good cause. We expect to collect and donate about US$40,000 to the Emirates Airline Foundation, but that amount could increase if more users log-on to Wi-Fi between now and the new year,” added Brannelly.

Delivery Of First Airbus A350 to Qatar Airways Postponed

Qatar Airways announced Wednesday that delivery of its first Airbus A350-900 XWB, originally planned for this weekend, has been postponed. No new date for the delivery or reasons for the delay were given; Qatar is the launch customer for the all-new widebody.

“The Airbus A350 aircraft ceremonial transfer of title has been postponed until further notice.

With the imminent launch of the new Airbus A350 program, both entities are committed to introducing the A350 very soon” the Doha-based carrier said in a statement.

The aircraft was scheduled to be handed to Qatar at Airbus’ delivery center in Toulouse Dec. 13, to arrive at Doha Hamad International Airport Saturday. Official ceremonies were then scheduled for all day Monday, Dec. 16.

Malaysia Airlines Sees 40% Increase in London

Malaysia Airlines has seen a 40 per cent increase in business class passengers flying its London Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur route this year.

The upturn in corporate traffic was measured between January 1 and August 31 and compared to the same period last year.

The news comes despite the disappearance of flight MH370 over the Indian Ocean in March and the tragic shootdown of MH17 over Ukraine four months later.

Weng Chi Lee, MAS' UK & Ireland area manager, said: "The corporate travel market never took a dip. That was very reassuring. We saw our business class passenger loads [on the London to Kuala Lumpur route]... increase 40 per cent, year-on-year."

He added: "We've got a good product — it's a double-daily A380 with first, business and economy class. We continue to refresh our products all the time. The corporate travellers are receptive to what we have and they find that it's a good way to go out to Asia."

Although business class travel is up by 40 per cent, the airline's overall traffic between LHR and Kuala Lumpur has decreased by 5 per cent from 85 to 80 per cent.

Two weeks ago, MAS became a step closer to becoming a nationalised private company after minority shareholders voted to approve Khazanah Nasional, the investment holding arm of the Malaysian government, becoming the sole shareholder.

Once approved by the High Court of Malaya, Khazanah will implement a 12-point, five-year business plan setting out strategies to rehabilitate the airline. The first move will be a reduction in staff from 20,000 to an estimated 14,000.

Despite the cutback in personnel, which is expected to mainly affect back-office staff, MAS currently has no plans to axe any of its routes.

Lee said: "The double-daily A380 operation between Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur is assured, it's staying... And it's not just the UK, the entire European as well as our worldwide network are staying the same for the time being."

Air Canada Beoing 787-9 to Delhi

Air Canada will launch a new non-stop Toronto to Delhi service next November.

The carrier will roster a B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a three-class configuration onto three of the route's four weekly frequencies.

From November 1, outbound service AC050 will depart Toronto at 2055 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and land in Delhi at 2115 the following day.

Return service AC051 will leave Delhi at 0045 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and arrive in Toronto at 0500 the same day.

All flights will be operated by the B787-9, apart from the Monday outbound service and the Wednesday return service, which will be B787-8 aircraft.

Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada's president and CEO, said: "We will be offering the only non-stop flight from Canada to India using our newest Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are revolutionising long-haul air travel.

"The operating economics of these new aircraft make this service feasible and it will be the first route dedicated to the larger, 787-9 version of this aircraft, which begin entering our fleet in 2015."

In September, Air Canada announced a series of new codeshare routes with Star Alliance partner Air India
